
Immersion Cooling -
As CPUs get faster and the lithography process of making them gets components smaller to stuck in more cores into the die, the heat generated by processors soars.
In order to deal with the enormous heat produced by faster and dense electric circuit, cooling system vendors are now developing immersion cooling for better heat dissipation.
Immersion cooling, also known as "direct liquid cooling", is a way for computer cooling in which electrical parts, are fully submerged in an electrically insulating liquid coolant. Heat is removed from a system by putting the coolant in direct contact with hot components, and circulating the heated liquid through the heat exchanger. This practice is very effective because liquid coolants can absorb more heat from the system than air. By the way, immersion cooling is nothing new. Immersing electric systems (specifically transformers) in dielectric fluids (mineral oil is commonly seen) for thermal management was used before 1887. It means that the breakthrough is mainly concentrated on coolant portions.
However, unlike many other devices, computers are not suitable for water cooling, as water is electrically conductive and will damage electronic components. Therefore, the fluids used in immersion cooling are dielectric liquids to ensure that they can safely contact energized electronic components.
